Homemade Veneers Could Harm Patients’ Oral Health and be a Costly Mistake.
Seemingly Budget-Friendly Options can cause Harm to Patients
Veneers are among the most transformative aesthetic dental procedures that one can have performed. Although they are incredibly effective, some dentist can upcharge patients and make the procedure seem unaffordable to some clients. At-Home veneers could harm patients and lead to disastrous and potentially irreversible results.
As many Americans are looking to tighten budgets, less expensive alternatives to professional dental care have gained traction on social media. This report from CBS news details an unfortunate incident regarding a cost-cutting dental solution. A woman from North Texas discovered the hard way how disastrously harmful at-home dentistry can be. She spent less than $30 on at-home veneers and applied them herself. The application went horribly wrong, and she had to seek treatment from a cosmetic dentist who had to grind the kit’s gel off her natural dentition, inflicting pain as well as damage to some natural tooth surfaces.
They are the relics of the previous two agonizing months, which Desma Kayhani relives every time she sees them.
“All I can do is cry,” Kayhani said. “This took away not only my smile but it took away my self esteem. I’m not the same person anymore.”
Kayhani stated that she couldn’t eat or drink anything due to the numerous cuts in her mouth. She not only endured a week of excruciating pain, but she is now facing thousands of dollars in medical bills to repair damage caused by a product she believes is dangerous.
She created a TikTok video that has received over 500,000 views and has resulted in a few donations from individuals moved by her predicament.
Kayhani is now forced to wear dentures, which she had hoped to avoid by purchasing the DIY veneers.
She intends to file a lawsuit against the overseas company that manufactured them.
