Veneers and Crowns
Veneers
Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. You no longer need to hide your smile because of gaps, chips, stains, or misshapen teeth. With veneers, you can easily correct your teeth’s imperfections to help you have a more confident, beautiful smile. Veneers are natural in appearance and are a perfect option for patients wanting to make minor adjustments to the look and feel of their smile. Porcelain Veneers are thin layers of porcelain shells that are bonded to teeth. A dental veneer is a ceramic laminate that is applied to the front of the tooth. Placing veneers is usually an irreversible process, because it’s necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your tooth to accommodate the shell.
Dental Crowns
A crown is a cover or “cap” your dentist can put over a tooth. The crown restores the tooth to its normal shape, size, and function. A crown can make the tooth stronger or improve the way it looks. Crowns are very strong, durable covers that fit snugly over the entire tooth to hide cosmetic issues like broken teeth, deep discoloration, or large, dark fillings, while also providing strength to the tooth structure. As a dental restoration, crowns are pretty much the only things that save damaged teeth from extraction. They’re often used on teeth that have had root canals to cover up the discoloration that usually follows a root canal and to help provide additional strength to the tooth, which may have been weakened by the removal of the interior pulp. They’re also used in bridge procedures to provide strength and protection to the teeth used to support a bridge. At Prima Family Dental we use a dental crown as a restoration treatment that completely encloses a tooth, effectively restoring its original size and shape.
You may need a crown if:
- You have a cavity that is too large for a filling
- You have a tooth that is cracked, worn down, or otherwise weakened
- You have had root canal treatment — the crown will protect the restored tooth
- You want to cover a discolored or badly shaped tooth and improve your smile
Usually, it takes two dentist appointments to complete the procedure, because most crowns have to be made in a dental laboratory. During the consultation, general and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Alla Shikhanovich and her associates, will discuss the patient’s crown options and develop a treatment plan based on their needs.
